Assessment and Development Planning

The Assessment Developmental Planning (ADP) training program enables participants to take the results of an AccuVision soft skills assessment, along with performance observations and other information and create a development plan for those assessed. Staff training is provided in a 4- to 5-hour program during which managers learn to create, communicate and monitor the development of staff. ADP ensures that workers and their managers are in agreement as to developmental activities; managers receive practical, hands-on experience that enables them to help workers develop soft skills over time.

Who Participates. The typical audience for this program is managers or supervisors of individuals who have been assessed by one of LRI's soft skills assessment programs.

Training Objectives. At the end of the training session, Trainees will be able to:

  • Understand and utilize the AccuVision Feedback Report to identify skill(s) in need of development and corresponding developmental activities

  • Understand and utilize planning forms to prepare for and conduct a developmental planning session with the participant

  • Conduct a developmental planning session with the participant using recommended strategies to ensure a successful meeting resulting in a mutually acceptable developmental plan

  • Monitor and support assessed individuals' ongoing development

Training Structure

  • The assessment instrument is described and corresponding skills are presented.

  • Each section of the Feedback Report is described and explained in great detail.

  • Trainees are shown how to take the information from the Feedback Report and determine which skill would be most beneficial for the participant to focus on for developmental purposes. In other words, Trainees determine which skill would be most beneficial for their direct report to develop. Trainees are encouraged to include their own observations of the participant's performance and any additional insight they might have when discussing the participant's developmental plan.

  • A Developmental Action Planning Session is described. This is the meeting where the Trainee and the subordinate discuss and agree upon the developmental action plan. This written plan includes specific skills components with relevant time frames, who will be involved, and how action(s) will be monitored.

  • A role-play is conducted for the group to observe an effective Developmental Action Planning Session. A second role-play can be conducted (this is generally an optional activity) where Trainees break into triads to practice conducting developmental planning sessions on their own.

  • The program concludes with a brief summary of the developmental planning process and the steps recommended to conduct a successful developmental planning session.

For additional information

LRI's online library contains an example of an ADP Participant's Manual to help managers and supervisors create developmental plans from individual feedback reports (assessments) for individuals reporting to them. LRI can also provide a representative ppt of a typical ADP session.
